How to prepare your backyard for winter
Winter is coming. With it, bad and cold weather. For those living in an apartment, this doesn’t make much of a difference. But people who live in houses have a lot of work to do to prepare for the winter. One of the things that need to be prepared for winter is your backyard. If you want your backyard to look amazing when spring arrives, you have to prepare it for winter. If you have some plants that you are growing that you want to keep alive over the winter, you have a lot of work to do. And here is where you can read how to prepare your backyard for winter. It will be a hard task if you have a big backyard but it is worth doing everything mentioned.
Get rid of dead and diseased plants
Over the summer and fall, a lot of bugs appear. This is why some of your plants might end up being infected by parasites or damaged from the heat and the sun. This is a normal occurrence. But keeping these plants in your backyard can only make a bigger mess when nice weather comes back. This is why you have to get rid of any diseased and dead plants that might be sitting in your backyard.
Remove them from the root. This will also create more space in your backyard for some new, nicer plants. While removing these dead and diseased plants, check whether there are any intruder plants. Some that you have not planted yourself. Some of them can be dangerous such as ivy.
Amend the soil
You then have to amend the soil. It is best to get some new soil in case you have some bugs that might want to ruin the rest of your plants. Add some compost as well to make it more fertile. When you do this before winter, these nutrients will have more time to break down and enrich the soil.
But amending soil also means planting new seeds. A lot of people leave this part of the task for spring but we believe that grass, for example, should be planted in winter so that it can grow faster when warm weather arrives.
Take care of our backyard during wintertime
You cannot just leave it like that over the winter. You have to do some work in the wintertime as well. For example, if snow hits, it is best to cover any plants that might not like snow. You can also replant them into large pots and take them into your home.
If you are growing fruits and vegetables, having a greenhouse is a good idea too. You can build one yourself or have professionals handle it. It can save you a lot of trouble. It is also a nice way to keep yourself busy during wintertime if you like doing yard work. And if you decide to sell your house, staging it will be easier if you constantly take care of your backyard, not just when it is nice outside.
It’s not difficult to prepare your backyard for winter with the right plan. Good luck!
